Integrative Medicine

Integrative medicine is the heart of our practice. What does that mean?

A focus on root causes rather than symptoms

Standard medical teaching and models of care can sometimes get that the wrong way round. There’s a tendency to prescribe pharmaceutical therapies to treat or manage the symptoms, rather than identifying and resolving the root cause. Both are important, but it’s a matter of balance.

This is particularly the case with chronic conditions. There may be medications which can manage your symptoms, but our goal is to work on the root cause to eliminate the condition, or at least reduce its severity.

Treatment personalised for you

As integrative medicine practitioners, we look at you, your nutrition, your lifestyle and your health more deeply and more holistically.

Conventional treatments work for many people, but not for everyone. Many of our patients have had disappointing outcomes from standard models of care.

We dig deep to understand why this is happening to you as an individual, rather than why it happens generally. We also want to know why it’s happening to you right now.

Our starting question is, ‘Does your body have all it genuinely needs to function?’ We capture a great deal of background information at your first appointment, which is why we have longer appointments. We may also recommend various tests. The aim is to hone in on what might be missing in your body, or what your body doesn’t process well, so that we can tailor treatment to what you need.

A bigger treatment toolbox

The pharmaceutical therapies of conventional medicine can be effective, but so can a whole range of other therapies. Once we’ve identified root causes, we can suggest a range of evidence-based natural therapies. That could be vitamins, herbal therapies, or sometimes natural hormones.

The intention is always to support your underlying physiology. We don’t always get it right – no one does, although all practitioners would like to! – but we go looking for the answer.

Could investigation of root causes and a personalised treatment plan help you?

Integrative Medicine FAQs

Integrative medicine, also known as functional medicine, focuses on treating root causes rather than symptoms. It combines conventional Western medical treatment with evidence-based, safe complementary and alternative therapies.

Many integrative therapies have been studied and proven effective in certain conditions. However, funding for large-scale clinical trials is difficult to obtain, so the amount of research varies by therapy and by condition. We maintain a database of over 3,000 papers, which we share with patients and online as appropriate.

Our patients have seen improvements for conditions including chronic conditions, auto-immune diseases, gastrointestinal issues, stress-related disorders and more. Treatment is tailored to the individual, and results vary from patient to patient.

As with conventional medication, you may experience side effects or interactions between therapies. Dr Tim Hall is medically qualified – he will take a full medical history and discuss any potential risks with you as part of developing your treatment plan. We also monitor patients carefully and respond to any issues promptly.

Your first appointment will include a detailed review of your medical history and current health; a lifestyle assessment, and discussion of your goals and options available. Based on the information provided, Dr Tim may recommend further testing, or may proceed to develop your personalised treatment plan.
