Sugar Reduction Could Save Lives

As we head into the festive season, some research from the US is worth bearing in mind – eating less sugar could lead to a longer, healthier life.

A recent study in the American Heart Association’s journal looked at modelling of a sugar reduction program in the US. The study estimates that a targeted 20% reduction of sugar in 15 food categories, and 40% in sweetened drinks, could prevent half a million cardiac deaths, 750 million cases of diabetes, and 2.5 million cardiac disease events over the lifetimes of US adults aged 35-80.

The good news is, we don’t need to wait for government programs to reduce our sugar intake. Simple strategies such as reading ingredient labels, reducing the number of sweet dishes we eat regularly, and reducing the amount of sugar we add to our meals and drinks can all contribute to a healthier diet.
