Innate Immunity – how NAD supports your body’s security force.
Innate immunity is the defence system we are all born with. Unlike adaptive immunity, which our body builds up following exposure to germs and other pathogens, innate immunity is ‘hard-wired’ and uses a number of strategies to keep invaders at bay.
This is a powerful system and can actually cause damage – such as in COVID-19 cases where the virus triggers a cytokine storm, a massive release of immune cells that actually damage the lungs in an attempt to respond to the virus.
NAD+ plays an important role as a mediator, helping to limit inflammation and boosting protective enzymes. Previous research has shown that NAD+ levels are severely depleted in COVID-19 cases, and further research is needed to understand how increasing patients’ NAD+ levels can help support cellular resilience.
