Glutathione offers brain boost – research

New research from Australia offers hope for future treatments of neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease by raising glutathione levels in the brain.

Glutathione is potent antioxidant, which plays important roles in the body including energy production, immune system support and heart health, and more.

Scientists from the University of New South Wales’ Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing and the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences found that dietary supplementation with a glutathione precursor reduced oxidative stress, neuroinflammation and amyloid pathology in the brains of mice. The mice also showed substantial cognitive improvements following supplementation.

The researchers say that supplementation to increase glutathione levels could have therapeutic benefit in people with Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative conditions.

At PIM we have a particular interest in nutritional supplementation, including glutathione. Contact us to learn more.
